I call this a Statement Table because it is designed for an entry way or along a wall under a large mirror or painting to make a statement in the space it occupies. The approximate 28 inch deep by 68 inch wide top is made of one inch thick cherry with breadboards at either end to allow for seasonal wood movement and retain flatness. The cage holding the drawers is made from walnut. The walnut struts extending from the top are attached to the top with dowels inserted through the walnut and into the thickness portion of the table top planks before glue up. Within the cage a cherry box assembled with handcut dovetails holds the two drawers. The drawer fronts are made from New England Honey Maple. Drawer interiors are of poplar. The legs are made from 34 layers of mesquite boards sculpted into 180 degree spirals. The front of the box holding the drawers is attached to the walnut cage, but it floats at the rear to allow for seasonal wood movement. The piece is finished with six coats of a wipe on varnish.
